Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide support to The Ohio State University (OSU) welding engineering students and faculty, and to promote professional development and fellowship among OSU welding engineering graduates.

FOOTBALL  TICKETS

We have tickets for two games this year:  OSU vs Miami FL at home Sept 11, and OSU at ILL Oct 2.

Here are the rules (as written by Brad Reed and approved by OSU AA):

For Miami:  Send your name, OSU Alumni Association number (not your Life membership number) to Brad Reed : geubux@yahoo.com.  In the subject, you had better put OSU Tickets or I might send you to SPAM purgatory.

I (Brad Reed) will conduct a lottery based on the number of requests I receive.  You CANNOT get tickets (two to a customer only) through Welding Engineering if OSU AA chooses you to receive Miami tickets as your regular game or if you or your significant other have season tickets.

You MUST be a current member of OSU AA and WE Alumni.  I will not be able to conduct the lottery until I receive a list of eligible names from OSU, probably mid July.

So, send me your sob stories and I’ll enter you in the lottery.  Many will play, few will win (depending on demand).

Last year, I drew EVERY name and made a list, just to be fair.  FYI, Jim Hurley, BSWE 1987, was the last name chosen.  If you see Jim, buy him a drink cuz he has no luck at all.

For Illinois, let me know if you are interested in a pair of tickets and we may do a lottery if demand warrants.

Also, let me know about other away games you may be interested in upcoming seasons.

Thanks,

Brad Reed at geubux@yahoo.com

2010 AWS WELDING ENGINEERING SURVEY

The American Welding Society is conducting a survey on the practice of welding engineering to determine the future role of welding engineering in our industry. Your academic background, training, and experience as a welding professional is very important to AWS and will greatly assist us in this work.

Answer as many of the questions in this survey as may apply to your situation (it is not necessary to answer a question if it does not apply to you).

Your identity is not required and you will not be contacted further in this regard.

APRIL 2010 AWS MEETING - COLUMBUS CHAPTER

The AWS Columbus Section Meeting for next month is on Thursday 5/6 and is a joint meeting with the AIAA.  This meeting is sponsored by AIAA.

Immediately following the presentation, the AWS chapter will hold a brief meeting to discuss officer elections and other chapter business.

When:          Thursday 5/6, 6:00pm

Where:         Arlington Banquets

                      1973 Henderson Road

                      Columbus, OH  43220

Speaker: Robert Zimmerman, science journalist and historian

Topic:  “Unknown Stories from Space: Astronaut Stories that Did Not Reach the Press”

In the last fifty years the human race has begun the exploration of the cosmos. Sometimes, the events have been newsworthy and famous, such as Yuri Gagarin's first flight and the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. Other times, the adventures of men and women in space have been ignored, hidden, or just plain forgotten.

The attached meeting notice contains more details including an abstract and biography as well as RSVP information.

Also, a brief memo discussing the AWS chapter agenda is attached.

Please RSVP by Monday 5/3/10 to Tom Ramsay.

All reservations are final on 5/3/10 and payment will be required.

OSU STUDENT RECRUITING EVENT

The "5 Under 25 Event" was organized by current junior Sujin Kim along with the Student Alumni Council. They brought back five recent graduates of the welding engineering program to answer questions from current Ohio State students. After the panel discussion, there was a reception with professors and alumni.  The event targeted freshman and sophomore engineering students who may not have decided what area they want to go into or are not happy with their current area. There were approximately 30 students in attendance; the event was such a success that Sujin is planning another one in the fall.  Thanks for Randy Dull and Jason Hurst for participating.  The OSUWEAS provided pizza for the event.

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY - HIGH SCHOOL MATERIALS JOINING COURSE BEING TAUGHT IN OHIO  AND WELD-ED

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) High School Materials Joining Course is being used in Ohio.  The same course is being disseminated by Weld-Ed for 2 year college faculty use.

As a result of the 2009 luncheon meeting, Prof. Dave Dickinson provided a copy of the Competencies (i.e. the Syllabus) so alumni can get access to it.  Click here for compentencies. In the PLTW scheme of things, instructors take a two week “train the trainer” program before they get the actual curriculum (actually 10 CD’s), but our alumni will understand the syllabus since it is actually the old WE 300 course.

For more information, please contact Dave Dickinson at ddickins@columbus.rr.com

NSF-I/UCRC CENTER FOR INTEGRATIVE MATERIALS JOINING FOR ENERGY APPLICATIONS

It gives Prof. Suresh Babu great pleasure to inform the Alumni that OSU's proposal for the planning grant to develop an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) entitled “Center for Integrative Materials Joining Science for Energy Applications,” has been approved by the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is important to note that this is indeed a significant recognition of NSF and their reviewers that there is a need to develop new engineering solutions for joining advanced materials.

The next step in this center development is to host a workshop with as many as possible industry participants to discuss the potential R&D needs related to welding and joining in energy applications and match the same with the technical capabilities within the Center.  This is an important step to understand industry needs and structure the center operational activities around your needs.

OSU WE is holding a comprehensive industry-university-NSF workshop at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio on December 7th and 8th. Please contact Professor Babu, if you would like to attend this meeting.

As a result of the 2009 luncheon meeting, Prof. Suresh Babu provided a copy of the presentation that explains the Center for Integrative Materials Joining for Energy Applications.  Click here for the presentation

RECRUITING TOOLS FOR GRADE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL

Prof. Rudy Buchheit recommends recruiting high school guidance counselors, as they stay in one place longer and can pass along the message to interested students on a continuing basis.

Here are some presentations that fellow alums are using to recruit students under college age or for career day events.

Click here for the presentation that Dave Farson uses for High School students

Click here for the presentation that Nancy Porter uses for Grade School students

If you have a presentation or video that you'd like to share with others, please send it to Nancy Porter at nancy_porter@ewi.org and she will post them here.
