2012 OSU MOONBUGGY PROJECT = SPONSORS NEEDED

The OSU Moonbuggy Team is seeking sponsors for this year’s efforts.

 

 

“The OSU Moonbuggy Team is an Engineering Group that builds a four wheeled Quadracycle like moonbuggy to compete in an annual race in Huntsville, Alabama at the U.S Space and Rocket Center. The point of the race is to challenge the engineers in the group to build and design the buggy while facing similar challenges that the NASA engineers faced when building the original lunar rover. Each year teams from all over the world come in both College and High School divisions.

Before racing, each team’s buggy is cleared before the pre-condition judges for fenders, diameter of high gain antenna, national or institution flag, TV Camera, batteries #1 and #2, and an Electronic Control Panel. Then the buggy is cleared for the 4 foot cube. Once the volume is cleared, the buggy is carried 20 feet by the two drivers, who must be female and male driver, in the folded position. The time that it then takes for the two drivers to assemble the buggy is then determined as the time it takes to have the buggy dissembled and have each driver in their seat with their seatbelts on. This time is added to the better of two races that each team is required to run for the official run time.

The OSU Moonbuggy Team consists of 11 members, mostly made up of welding Engineers, but also includes a mechanical engineer. In the 2012 Great Moonbuggy Race, the OSU team placed third of about 40 College teams. The current buggy we are running is the same buggy we have raced last year, however major changes have been made to the steering and suspension, all addressing the weaknesses we faced with at the 2011 competition. Our changes include reducing rebound of the shocks for less out of control bouncing after going over large bumps, reducing weight, adding “rake” to the a-arms of the suspension to reduce the impact felt in the wheels, and adding folding seat instead of seat that insert into the buggy to reduce our set up time.”

2011 AWS LUNCHEON AND ANNUAL MEETING

The 2011 Luncheon was held on Nov 16 at McCormick Place during the FABTECH Show.  The keynote speaker was Rudolph G. Buchheit, Professor and Chair, Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University.  There were 70 attendees, including 21 students plus faculty and staff.

At the conclusion of the May 5 tour, AWS members will gather for a brief business meeting to conduct an election for the upcoming year.

The Annual AWS Golf Outing and Social will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2012.  A postcard with preliminary information is available.  Full details will be provided as the event nears.

AWS Scholarship - Columbus Chapter

The AWS Columbus Section will award its first annual scholarship for $1250 this year.  The application is on the section's website and must be postmarked by May 26.

The scholarship is available to those with a home address within the section's boundaries who are pursuing education in welding, welding technology, or welding engineering.  Membership in AWS is not required.

Spread the word to friends, family, and associates who may be able to benefit from this scholarship.

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY - HIGH SCHOOL MATERIALS JOINING COURSE BEING TAUGHT IN OHIO  AND WELD-ED

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) High School Materials Joining Course is being used in Ohio.  The same course is being disseminated by Weld-Ed for 2 year college faculty use.

As a result of the 2009 luncheon meeting, Prof. Dave Dickinson provided a copy of the Competencies (i.e. the Syllabus) so alumni can get access to it.  Click here for compentencies. In the PLTW scheme of things, instructors take a two week “train the trainer” program before they get the actual curriculum (actually 10 CD’s), but our alumni will understand the syllabus since it is actually the old WE 300 course.

NSF-I/UCRC CENTER FOR INTEGRATIVE MATERIALS JOINING FOR ENERGY APPLICATIONS

It gives Prof. Suresh Babu great pleasure to inform the Alumni that OSU's proposal for the planning grant to develop an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) entitled “Center for Integrative Materials Joining Science for Energy Applications,” has been approved by the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is important to note that this is indeed a significant recognition of NSF and their reviewers that there is a need to develop new engineering solutions for joining advanced materials. 


The next step in this center development is to host a workshop with as many as possible industry participants to discuss the potential R&D needs related to welding and joining in energy applications and match the same with the technical capabilities within the Center.  This is an important step to understand industry needs and structure the center operational activities around your needs. 

OSU WE is holding a comprehensive industry-university-NSF workshop at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio on December 7th and 8th. Please contact Professor Babu, if you would like to attend this meeting.

Department Move from IWSE to MSE

On Saturday 2-6-10, Prof. Rudy Buchheit reported that an important milestone for MSE and WE was passed yesterday as the Board of Trustees voted to transfer WE programs from ISE to MSE. Here is the excerpt from the OSU newsroom:

Program transfer approved

The board approved the transfer of academic programs in welding engineering from the Department of Integrated Systems Engineering to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. There will be no changes to degree programs in either of the units.

The class of 1964 held their 45th year reunion on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the welding engineering facilities in the Edison Joining Technology Center. For their 40th reunion, Eldon Brandon (1938-2010) put together an excellent synopsis of the reunion complete with pictures and bios .

The OSU Welding Engineering Alumni Society lost one of our biggest supporters recently with the passing of retired OSU Professor Bill Green (BSWE & MSWE 1952).Bill was an inspiration to most of us during his long association with OSU.
